Classes of Driver’s Licences

Learner’s License

When you come into our office to write your learner’s exam on the Driver Knowledge Testing System (DKTS), you must bring identification , and proof of Alberta residency if you are 18 years of age and over.

Oral learner’s knowledge exams are available by appointment only.

You may write your learner’s exam in our offices Monday to Friday from 8:30am – 5:00pm and Saturdays from 9:00am – 2:00pm. If you pass the test, the license will be issued for a maximum term of five years (depending on residency and/or medical conditions, class of license and age).

Identification Card

A photo identification card is available to an Alberta Resident who does not or cannot hold a valid Alberta operator’s license. The minimum age for an identification card is 12 years.

To renew your Alberta Driver’s License please ensure that you bring your license, medical (if required depending on class of license, medical condition or age) and, if required, proof of Canadian residency (eg. work permit).

If you are temporarily outside the Province of Alberta and need to renew your drivers licence you will need fill out the Renewal/Replacement Licence for Alberta Residents Temporarily Outside of Alberta Application Form.

Driver’s Abstract/Commercial Driver Abstractcommercial-license

An Alberta driver’s abstract gives you your driving history for the last 3, 5, or 10 years.  You may require the abstract for employment or insurance purposes. Click here to get your  Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Driver Abstract Consent (to authorize someone else to act on your behalf) or a Notarized Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information (if you are out of the province and you do not have anyone to act on your behalf).
