Road Test Information

By booking online through our affiliate AlbertaDriverExaminer.ca, you can save yourself from having to make two trips to the registry; once to book your test, and once to take your test.

If you don’t have a credit card or can’t book online then you must first visit Cochrane Registries to reserve and pay for your road test. Once your road test has been scheduled you must come again for your scheduled class 5 basic or class 5 advanced road test.

If you book your road test online, please read all the terms and conditions carefully.

It is required by law that you provide certain documentation to your scheduled road test.
The vehicle that you must provide to perform your class 5 advanced or class 5 basic road test must also be in adequate condition, with certain equipment that is mandatory for your road test. For example, working signal lights and brake lights.

Our Policies

Only you and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle. No other passengers or pets are allowed. The only exception occurs when the examiner is accompanied by a government official in the course of being monitored.

Examiners are booked on an availability basis and cannot be requested.

If you are unable to provide a vehicle to take your Class 5 Basic, Class 5 Advanced or Class 4 Road Test a rental vehicle is now available!  Please contact our offices for more information.

If you are providing your own vehicle. Your vehicle must have the following and be in acceptable working condition:

  1. Enough fuel for the road test; Headlights, Brake Lights and Signal Lights; Horn; Brakes/Park Brake; Speedometer; Tires; Vehicle seats/seat belts; Unobstructed Windshield/Wiper; Mirrors; Exhaust system/muffler; Driver and Passenger Doors. Please ensure the interior of the vehicle is reasonably clean.
  2. Proof of valid registration and insurance
    MUST be in the same name (if company vehicle MUST have a letter of authorization; if the vehicle is a rental vehicle your name MUST show on the rental agreement; if the vehicle has Dealer plates you must be an employee of the dealership with a letter of authorization).
  3. All condition codes that appear on your driver’s license must be met to be taken out on the test.
  4. Only a VALID Alberta Operator’s License (Alberta Driver’s License or Alberta Learner’s License) will be accepted. The only exception is for suspended Alberta drivers.
  5. If you do not meet all the prerequisites, or are not eligible (knowledge test, Alberta Registries approved medical, sufficient driving history), for the class of license you are testing for, the examiner will not take you out for your road test. A new Road Test permit will have to be purchased.

Road Test Permit Cancellation / No Show Policy:

A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to reschedule your exam at no charge. If you cancel your road test there is a non-refundable cancellation fee of $50.00.If there is less than 24 hours’ notice given there is no refund. Road Tests and Money are non-transferable. To re-book your Road Test please contact Cochrane Registries at (403) 932-5546.Should you fail to attend your road test appointment at the scheduled time, your fees will be forfeited. A new Road Test permit will have to be purchased.

  • Permits that have been lost after passing the exam at our office may be replaced for a $5.00 Government fee.
  • If you do not meet all the prerequisites, or are not eligible (knowledge test, Alberta Registries approved medical, sufficient driving history), for the class of license you are testing for, the examiner will not take you out for your road test. A new Road Test permit will have to be purchased.

Failure to comply with any of the above conditions will result in a forfeiture of any fees paid.

Remember, it is your driving competence that is tested, allowing our driver examiners to pass only those people who have proven that they have the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle according to the Alberta Transportation testing procedures. When you have passed your Class 5 License Road Test exam, it is because you have proven that you can handle yourself on the road.

When you are ready, contact Cochrane Registries, or, book online. Booking your road test online means you can reserve a spot and pre-pay for your road test. By booking online you can also avoid two trips to the registry.

Please be sure you are eligible, and contact us if you are unsure. When you are providing your own vehicle, please make sure that it is in proper working condition as vehicles that do not pass a basic safety check will not be permitted for testing purposes.

When the time comes for you to take your class 5 road test, show up 15-20 minutes early so that you can check in with one of our registry clerks and obtain a test permit. You will need your Valid Alberta Class 7 learner’s license to purchase the permit and to go out for your Class 5 Road Test. Please ensure that you have all of the necessary items with you so that you do not run into a problem.

Here is a more detailed list of what you should bring:

  • Valid Class 7 Alberta’s Learners License
  • Valid Insurance & Registration for the vehicle that you are providing for your road test
  • Test Permit:
    If you booked online your test permit is prepaid. You can pick up your test permit 15-20 minutes before your road test begins.
    If you booked in person you will have received a test permit for your upcoming road test when you pay.
    You must provide this test permit to the driver examiner before your road test begins.
  • Corrective lenses if you need them for driving.
  • Medical, if required

After the test, the road is yours, assuming you passed. You will be able to drive where you want in your own vehicle, all on your own. Failing your class 5 road test in Calgary may not set you free, but taking your road test at Cochrane Registries might, just remember to brush up on your driving skills so that you know your stuff, increasing your chances of a successful test.
